Welcome to Kerri Lewis, the new sales assistant of Liftvrac America Inc.

We take the opportunity of this new issue to welcome Kerri, who joined us in March.

Kerri has behind her over ten years of experience in sales, and enjoys more than anything promoting new products to customers.

She will be working in tandem with Yoann Dauphin, our Export Manager, at having our Liftvrac more widely known over the American territory, and will gradually take charge of sales follow-up activities for the U.S.A.

Why not replace your dump buggies with a Liftvrac?

Dump buggies are still often employed in the agrifood industry to carry products from one machine to another.

However, this solution is far from being the optimal one for both employees’ safety and production lines’ efficiency. If it’s still in use, it’s thus generally because other conveying and lifting systems are unable to properly carry the product which is either too fragile (and damaged by continuous conveying systems), or too pasty (which generates clogging issues).
Yet, it is precisely in such cases that our Liftvrac food conveyor can reveal all the potential of its unique lifting concept.
Foie gras, meat, frozen vegetables, we already successfully replaced the dump buggies of several manufacturers. So why not yours?

Moving dump buggies from one point to another is a repetitive task that implies hard physical efforts (due to the weight of filled buggies) with an unergonomic working position (arched back). This operation thus meets all the conditions for musculoskeletal disorders, especially if production volumes are high. At one of our customers, each of the 15 employees dedicated to this task had for example to move 3 tons of product every hour.

Furthermore, the use of dump buggies very often requires to scrape them once they’ve been turned upside down, an operation for which the employee has to climb steps or a ladder and bend over the buggies : this represents additional risks for its safety.

Transporting goods in dump buggies is in essence a sequential process : the downstream machine is not fed continuously. Hence, the production equipment is not used at full potential which constrains productivity. And possibilities for improvement are quite limited.

Eventually, if one considers the level of manpower required by this conveying system associated with the operating losses brought by discontinuous feeding, dump buggies can prove to be quite costly.

Our Liftvrac is the specialist for continuous lifting of fragile, pasty and/or sticky products ; it thus meets the needs of all applications that could up to now rely on no other solution than dump buggies. Its modularity furthermore allows to configurate it freely in order to connect 2 machines using a minimum floor space ; it can thus fit in almost all production environments.

By replacing your dump buggies with a Liftvrac, you will be able to increase your productivity and reallocate human resources for value added tasks. But benefits do not limit to this : our customers also found that using our equipment led to significant improvements on product losses and cleaning times that contributed to shorten their ROI.

Our lifting conveyor now available in Japan

We are pleased to announce that we signed a distribution agreement with Sumitomo Shoji Machinex, to help Japanese food companies improve their efficiency thanks to our unique and patented lifting system for bulk food.

Based in Tokyo, Sumitomo Shoji Machinex is specializing in machinery, electronics, information and communications, as well as building equipment. This trading company has been been contributing to industrial development of Japan since its foundation in 1962, as a member of the Sumitomo Corporation Group. It now runs 8 offices in Japan, as well as several other sales offices in Asia (China, Thailand etc).

Sumitomo Shoji Machinex whose aim on the food market is to source innovative equipments from foreign countries and make them available for Japanese customers, discovered the Liftvrac when visiting food machine makers who warmly recommended our lifting conveyor to their customers.

Mr. Yasumasa Suzuki immediately identified in the Liftvrac a solution that could help Japanese food manufacturers improve their operating profit by reducing product losses and saving time in production as well as for cleaning operations. Moreover, the modular design of the Liftvrac helps it fit in narrow production environments, which is also an issue in Japan.

Since we concluded our commercial agreement, Sumitomo Shoji Machinex approached food manufacturers on very different markets such as cheese, confectionary or fresh salad, who nevertheless all face the same challenge : efficiently elevate delicate, pasty and/or sticky products.

The first demonstration organized in Japan with fresh cabbage, meat, salmon etc. gathered last May 20 people from 15 different companies.

No doubt that the Liftvrac is about to succeed in Japan as well !

All food manufacturers today agree to say that the era of big production campaigns is well and truly over. From now on, if they want to efficiently meet the demand of their various distribution channels, they must be able to produce many different recipes in small batches. This is a major trend of Industry 4.0, which ready-made food specialists already face.

What can be the consequences of this new trend on manufacturers’ requirements for foodstuff conveying all along their process ? How can conveying equipment help increase the flexibility of production lines ? There is up to now few literature on this subject, which though appears fundamental to us. In the same time, we noticed that some of our customers were using our Liftvrac as a means to make their process more flexible. We thus thought it might be useful to share this experience.

Cleaning cycles are with no doubt, when they are required several times a day, the operation that has the biggest negative impact on the overall performance of a production line. For a manufacturer who wants to produce within a day about 10 recipes on a single line (which is the case of one of our customers), each cleaning cycle must be as fast and efficient as a Formula 1 pit stop.

This is what we offer with our conveying belt which never gets very dirty and can be cleaned very quickly. This feature is often a decisive advantage for our equipment compared with conventional lifting conveyors.

This option was retained by another customer of ours, who dedicates a belt to each of his recipes. The line is thus stopped for a minimum amount of time (the one needed to dismantle the belt and replace it) and cleaning operations are carried out while the line is running.

An additional benefit of this option is that is offers a higher level of safety in allergen management since belts used to carry such ingredients will not be used for recipes which must be free of them.

Can one imagine a Liftvrac fitted with sensors to detect residues that would have resisted the cleaning procedure ? Or a Liftvrac connected to the workshop’s MES (Manufacturing Execution System) to automatically launch the cleaning cycles and register them in the quality management system ? Yes, of course, this is technically feasible. If you feel interested in such developments just let us know,  we will be happy to discuss the subject with you !

Production - Liftvrac implements the 5S method

In response to the development of our sales in France and abroad, we decided to review entirely our production management in order to increase our responsiveness. This task was given to Quentin Guglielmini.

Newcomer in our team, Quentin is 25 years old. Mechanical design engineer trained at IPSA, a school specialized in aeronautics, he has been working one year long at SAFRAN on a production reallocation project before joining us. He is in charge of reorganizing our workshop and managing our supply chain.

APPLICATIONS PET FOOD AND LIVESTOCK FEED - subject to the same hygiene rules as human food

Liftvrac can carry wet or dry, cold or hot foodstuffs with a very high level of hygiene.

If manufacturers of animal food are closely considering the Liftvrac for their production, it is because they encounter, with conventional lifting devices, the same problems as the other manufacturers in the food-processing industry : hard cleaning, product losses, damaged products...

The Liftvrac is a relevant solution for dry food...

Just after cooking and cutting, these foodstuffs are  hot, sticky and slippery. With conventional belt conveyors, they need to be lifted with a small angle and containers need to be installed under the belt to collect losses. Such precautions are useless with the Liftvrac and its patented conveying belt which, by wrapping around the products, allows to hold , protect and lift them close to vertical. A specific system can also be fitted at the upper end of our equipment to collect fine particles.

... as well as for wet food

Very sticky also, these products tend to agglomerate in conventional lifting devices ; this generates cleaning issues, production downtimes and complications on weighers. Such problems can easily be solved as well with a Liftvrac linked to the right feeding hopper : products will be lifted without being compacted and pieces sticking to the belt will be carefully scraped at the outfeed of the conveyor.

A patented, polyurethane based, conveying belt,

with a positive guidance system made of 2 double lines of cogs plus Kevlar® strengthening, avoids any slipping, guiding or elongation issues that can be encountered with conventional belts. In its 80 Shore version, our belt can carry without any problem very hot products (up to 90°C). Very easy to dismantle and to clean, it has already widely proven to be valuable for hygiene in the food-processing industry.

Liftvrac is currently studying several projects on the petfood market ; should you also be willing to test your products on our equipment, feel free to contact us.

INNOVATION - Hydraulic lifting available as an option for devices fitting with a reclining structure

We have improved the lifting system of our reclining devices, replacing the manual winch by an hydraulic cylinder.

This new device is going to reduce operators’ physical exertions while increasing their safety, and provide even more flexibility  to our equipment (the hydraulical cylinder offers infinite adjustment possibilities).

For the record, our devices fitted with a reclining structure can adapt to different environments. The lifting system also enables to lower the Liftvrac for easy, quick and safe cleaning from ground level.

This hydraulic cylinder will in the near future become the only device used on our equipment, as a logical consequence of our will to standardize our components.

The Liftvrac team keeps growing

We have the pleasure of welcoming Rémi Delfault in our team.

Despite his young age (23), Rémi already has a good experience of the agrifood industry.  Holding a diploma in industrial maintenance, he has worked for 3 years in an EURIAL dairy factory specialized in butter and cream production, as a technician first, and then as maintenance workshop foreman.

Rémi is now in charge of assembling the Liftvrac conveyors in our workshop and installing them on your production sites ; you will then probably have the opportunity to get to know him very soon !

At ease in every situation

The IFFA and Expo Pack exhibitions (hold respectively in Germany and Mexico), to which we participated together with our partners Inotec and Proeco Pack, were a good opportunity to present our Liftvrac along with the devices it today mostly feeds in production : a mixer and a weigher (90% of installed Liftvrac).

Our Liftvrac often integrates ideally with this kind of equipment as it allows to :

  • bring a solution in case of serious layout or footprint constraints (lack of space above a weigher,  conveying through a partition wall, linking of 2 machines set side by side...),
  • lift any kind of ingredient without loss,
  • monitor precisely the output rate through servomotor drive,
  • protect products from any potential contamination while conveying them,
  • ensure that no residue remain in the conveyor, with simple cleaning procedures.

Products can be fed continuously into the Liftvrac from all kinds of equipment (deep-freezing or cooking tunnels, grinders/mincers, churns, hoppers, bin tilters...) using a range of hoppers tailored to all needs :

  • pasty and dense products,
  • very fluid products,
  • powders,
  • agglomerated products.

With its modular design and performance level, the Liftvrac can in fact adapt to almost all situations. It indeed offers :

  • a quite wide range of output rates, from 100 kg to 20 tons per hour (density 1),
  • the possibility to elevate products up to 9 meters,
  • S and C standard modules that enable to achieve the optimum conveying trajectory,
  • troughed modules for horizontal conveying,
  • movable models and angle adjustment options, that make it easily usable on several lines.

As a specialist of tailor-made layouts, our technical department can help you optimize your installation. Feel free to seek advice from them !

Industrial manufacturers of snack and confectionary equip themselves with Liftvrac conveyors

Since we published an article about the benefits offered by the Liftvrac for the manufacturing of snacks and ready-to-serve dishes in the october 2014 issue of our newsletter, these industries have become an important part of our business. Over the first half-year 2016, 50% of our orders and installation projects relate to these markets plus the confectionary one, which faces similar issues.

Industrial manufacturers who chose the Liftvrac are European as well as American or Asian ; they  have to deal with numerous products and ingredients, often fragile (chips, expanded snacks, peanuts) pasty (chocolate paste) and/or sticky (deli meats) and were searching for a solution that would allow them to shift from one production to another in minimum time, with no risk of cross-contamination.

In most cases, the Liftvrac replaces conveyors equipped with cleats or slatted belts, after a comparative testing that proves the benefits of our solution :

  • almost no product loss,
  • product integrity is maintained,
  • no retention zone and simplified cleaning procedures.

New Access range : Simplified and standardized design for 15% savings on equipment cost

The modular design of our Liftvrac is one of its main competitive advantages and is highly appreciated by manufacturers who need to lift their products in complex premises layouts. Custom-built from a specific technical study, it can adapt to almost any configuration.

But this design mode has a cost, for which we sometimes received criticism, especially when the equipment requires no particular adjustments.

Concerned about better meeting all kinds of needs with a cost-effective solution, we have drawn on our 8 years of experience with the Liftvrac to create a standardized range so that more companies can afford to buy our equipment.

Comprised of 3 modules only, pre-defined by our technical services, our Access range nevertheless offers the possibility to create many variations of our Liftvrac.

By eliminating the engineering stage and reducing the number of modules we have been able to save around 15% on the manufacturing costs of our equipment.

Hygienic design : Liftvrac goes a step further and joins EHEDG

By becoming a member of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group, composed of equipment manufacturers, food companies, research institutions and public health bodies, Liftvrac is joining an authoritative reference in terms of hygienic equipment design and manufacturing process for food products elaborated or imported in Europe.

Our member status will allow us to continue the process we have initiated in order to adapt all our devices to the requirements of U.S 3-A standards (with which EHEDG directives are aligned), by relying on the guidance documentation released by the association and exchanges with other members.

After our hopper and our motor head (see the october 2015 issue of our newsletter), we have entirely reviewed the design of our cleaning pig in order to meet the requirements of U.S 3-A and EHEDG standards :

- Moulded instead of welded

- Its body is solid instead of hollow

  - Its is fitted with 8 flexible strips to ensure perfect cleaning of the tube with a single stroke.

New : A standard hopper for the breaking up of agglomerated products

This new hopper was born from what we noticed when visiting several manufacturers : there were no standard solution able to break up agglomerated products (such as vegetables coming out of a freezer)  while feeding a conveyor.

All the devices we could observe were custom-built, one at a time, by  equipment integrators, without industrial perspective.

We thus designed and industrialized our new hopper taking into account the outfeed height and width of industrial freezers, in order to propose a device that saves space and is much easier to clean than all we have seen.

Our hopper can be fitted with different rear output sieves, depending on the size of the products that need to be conveyed.

They are interested in our Liftvrac : Report on Process Expo and PPMA exhibitions

Nearly 300 visitors visited us on these two exhibitions, which both held in September, in order to discover the Liftvrac.

Success confirmed for our conveyor : we have received many quotation requests and were even obliged to sell the equipment we had brought on Process Expo for demonstration purpose.

For all our visitors, the Liftvrac is a simple, reliable and finally obvious solution to product loss and cleaning issues.

Discover in the graph herebelow which industries are the most interested by our technology.

Focus on the Fruits & Vegetables industry

Amongst visitors working in the transformation process of fruits and vegetables, 1 out of 4  encounters problems with potatoe, a product which is particularly sticky.

New developments :

Compliance with 3-A sanitary standards

The North American market is particularly demanding with regard to the quality and cleanability of equipments dedicated to the food industry. We had to opportunity to observe this once again when attending the Process Expo exhibition in Chicago.

On this market the 3-A sanitary standards are unavoidable for any equipment intended for the handling, processing or packaging of goods that require the highest level of hygiene.

This is the reason why we have designed a new hopper and a new motor head, both complying with 3-A standards requirements.

These two new devices are a major asset when presenting our equipment to health autorities in North America.

The 3-A version of our hopper and motor head are optional fittings on the French market.

The Liftvrac attracts more and more users overseas

Since we have intensified the promotion of our Liftvrac abroad, we have received many requests from manufacturers based in Europe, North America and Asia and who are facing issues such as product losses, equipment cleaning or products almost impossible to elevate.

We have already installed several equipments in the United Kingdom, in Belgium, in Germany, in Sweden, but also in the United States, in Mexico, in Canada and in Indonesia.

Our tehnology replaces bucket elevators, inclined conveyors with cleats, vacuum systems and worm screws as well.

Our latest installations deal with the elevation of various products : cookie dough, diced tomatoes, grated mozarella, and sugar.

Seafood exhibition : The Liftvrac retains the attention of industrials involved in seafood processing

For its first participation in the Seafood exhibition, hold in Brussels last April, Liftvrac welcomed on its booth a large number of industrials involved in seafood processing and looking for new conveying solutions for their products.

Perfect for sticky or delicate processed products

The unique lifting principle used by the Liftvrac allows to handle the most delicate seafood products without damaging them. The belt scraping system, which is commonly added to our equipment, is for its part a perfect solution to avoid product losses when conveying sticky products. It is thus no surprise that we have been visited by industrials looking for solutions to generate savings on their production lines, be they for diced fish, scallops, shrimps, seaweeds or surimi.

An appealing ease of cleaning

In the same logic of process optimization, the low fouling up rate of our equipment and its user-friendly cleaning procedures also raised interest amongst our visitors. They particularly appreciated the opportunity we offer them to increase their production capacity by reducing the time devoted to equipment cleaning.

Focus on the conveying of cooked shrimps

Cooked shrimps are extremely delicate and this makes them a very specific product to handle, with strong conveying constraints. This is the reason why we choosed them as a test product in order to compare the performance of our Liftvrac against those of conventional conveying systems.

Meshes and joint axes : traps for antennas

On modular belts, antennas often get trapped in a mesh or a joint axis, with two possible consequences :

- the shrimp hangs on the belt and finally falls on the floor,

- antennas get broken and remain caught on the belt.

In the first case, product loss is high but easy to spot and quantify. But when only antennas remain caught on the belt, it is much more difficult to assess a loss rate. And yet it is as much product weight that will not end up in the final packaging, with an obvious impact on manufacturer’s profit margin.

Loosing their head on cleats

Conveyor belts with cleats, for their part, generate jolts that have a direct impact on shrimps’ appearance. The junction between the head and the abdomen is stressed beyond its resistance limit and the head can get partially or totally separated from the tail. Although this phenomenon has no consequence in terms of product loss, it has a real impact on the quality perceived by the consumer.

Liftvrac : smooth and gentle

Carefully wrapped in the smooth tube-shaped conveying belt, shrimps suffer no stress and are delivered into the weigher in the same state they have been loaded in the conveyor.

The extensive testing campaign we have conducted on cooked shrimps proved that with our Liftvrac product losses are close to zero, when the conventional systems that were used as a comparison showed a loss rate of around 2%.

Automatic cleaning of the Liftvrac :

An even more efficient system

We have improved the automatic cleaning system of our Liftvrac in order to answer the needs of all the users of our equipment and give them the opportunity to further increase their productivity.

3 water-spraying bars and higher water flow for a more efficient rinse

The automatic cleaning procedure of the Liftvrac includes two rinse cycles : the first one after having emptied the Liftvrac, the second one after the disinfectant foam has been applied. Thanks to the technical upgrades we brought to our system, these operations are carried out more efficiently and the global water consumption is reduced.

Setting of the foam action time

Altough the disinfectant foam is still applied manually for more safety, the operator can schedule the time during which it shall act before the second rinse cycle is automatically triggered. This way, he won’t have to come back to launch the rinse and the cleaning cycle will be optimized.

We are pleased to inform you that we will be present at the SEAFOOD GLOBAL EXPO, in Brussel  between 21 to 23 of April.
